God’s kindness leads us to repentance

Hosea 11:4

I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love. To them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek, and I bend down to feed them.

Romans 2:4

Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?

Sometimes it’s the simplest of things that have the biggest impact in our lives: a kindness shown at a vulnerable moment, someone sharing their humble love of their Savior, or an unlikely person reaching out to you in friendship. These can be the moments that change your life forever, and you might not even realize it at the time. It may take years for you to see the Lord’s kindness to you and his simple acts of love, that led you to repentance and salvation.

Suzie was an eight-year-old neighbor of my husband Derek, when he was a single young man of 25. Suzie’s father had died that year in a plane crash and she was devastated by the loss. Suzie said they never talked about her father or his death. The family were not believers, so in their eyes, he was just gone. As you can imagine this left a huge void in Suzie’s life.

Suzie would wander the neighborhood with her one friend, her dog Dakota. She would come by Derek’s house and visit with him as he worked in his yard, or he would stop what he was doing to sit with her on the front porch and visit for a bit.

Suzie was the youngest of four girls, with our closest sibling being 10 years her senior. There was no one her age to play with in their neighborhood so she came to think of Derek as her friend. Derek had accepted Jesus as Lord a few years before that and was just trying to follow after Christ as best he could; being kind to a little girl seemed easy to him and the right thing to do.

He became friends of the family and even shared his faith with them. At the time Derek was the only Christian they knew and unbeknownst to him, he made a big impact on the family.

32 years later Derek came across some old pictures of himself and Suzie sitting on the front porch with Dakota and he thought Suzie might enjoy seeing them, so he sent them to her. She receive them on her 40th birthday and was overwhelmed by the pictures. She was able to see God’s gracious hand of love and kindness to her, to send her a male role model when her father had died. She was a little girl that needed a friend and God sent her exactly what she needed. Eventually her whole family came to faith, and they thank their Heavenly Father for sending a kind young man that loved Jesus into their neighborhood.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for your love and kindness to us. Reveal to us some of those sweet moments that were completely orchestrated by you, for isn’t every good thing from your amazing hand? We praise you and thank you for your constant care of us. May you be glorified in our praise Lord our God.

James 1:17

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

  1. I love this story. Derek was available and willing to care for a soul – laying ‘his’ schedule aside in order to be about ‘His’ schedule. I am reminded of two different Corrie Ten Boom quotes

“If the devil can’t make us bad he will make us busy’

This is what the past is for! Every experience God gives us, every person he puts in our lives is the perfect preparation for the future that only he can see.”
