Move on to Thanksgiving

Psalm 50:8-15

I do not rebuke you for your sacrifices… I have no need of a bull from your stall or goats from your pens, for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. I know every bird in the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine. If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it. Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High and call upon me in the day of trouble I will deliver you, and you will honor me.

The Lord does not rebuke us for our repentant hearts and tears of sorrow for our wrongdoings; for it is good to seek the Lord’s forgiveness as we confess our sins to him (Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.) When we have done that the Lord encourages us to move on to thanksgiving. The Lord has forgiven us, we are cleansed, we have acknowledged our sin before him and we will seek to walk in purity today. Do not continue to sacrifice (try to make atonement on your own) for a sin that has already been forgiven.

Before Jesus came to make atonement for our sins, the godly man or woman would bring a sacrifice to the temple, a bull or goat to be burned at the altar for a sin. The innocent animal would pay the ultimate penalty for sin in place of the person making the offering. People began to think the Lord needed these sacrifices. The more bulls and goats offered on the temple altar the more the Lord would be pleased with them and answer their prayers (that sounds like manipulation to me).

In this psalm the Lord so beautifully tells us he has no need of multiple sacrifices. He does not need bulls and goats for he owns every animal on earth: from lions in the jungle, cattle and sheep in the hills, birds in the air to little mice in the fields. They all belong to the Lord.

Jesus has paid the penalty for our sins, the sacrifice has been made. Acknowledge your sin, ask the Lord’s forgiveness and move on to thanksgiving.

Do not attempt to manipulate the Lord with your continued sacrifices. He does not need them or want them. As fallen people we will sin again, and the process will be repeated, but we do not need to hang on to those past sins, they have been forgiven and forgotten by the Lord. Now praise and thank him.

Prayer: I do just that O Most High God, I praise and thank you for cleansing me from my sin and making me as white as snow in your eyes. What joy and peace I have in your presence today. I love you my Father.
