“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV
The word ‘training’ brings to mind several things: running, swimming, children, driving, and discipline. Why do we cringe when we hear the word discipline? We don’t like to give it nor receive it. Society thinks of discipline as punishment or negative. However, discipline in Latin, disciplina, means knowledge or instruction.
Our children did not come with an owner’s manual. Yet, we desperately need one at times don’t we?! In my private practice, I enjoy giving parents tools to use to help them with their parenting struggles. It’s so exciting to see the positive changes in both the parents and their children!
God is so excited when He sees us, His children, growing in positive ways. God has given us the best tool and life manual ever: His Word in the Bible. He delights in us when we train in His Word. Each time we study His Word we are being disciplined; trained up to be servants (helpers) of God. We are equipped by our God-given gifts and abilities to serve one another in love. When we are willing to be trained and disciplined by Him, we not only delight our Father, but in turn, we can train our children and their children to love Him and one another.
Prayer: Dear Father, what a blessing it is to have access to Your Word in so many forms. Thank you that we can freely share Your Word in a variety of ways to encourage one another. May we daily be obedient and seek Your scriptures for Your training, guidance and encouragement. With all of my love, in Jesus’ precious name. Amen.
