How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!
1 John 3:1a (NIV)
I can remember the first time I realized my father loved me. I was probably about eight years old and my sister had just taken a tumble down our steep staircase. It sounded terrible as she banged and thumped her way down the stairs. I started crying right away; I was so scared for her. But before she even reached the bottom, my dad came flying out of my parents bedroom and leapt down the stairs two at a time to reach my sister.
I stood there in shock, as I took in what had just happened.
My dad was always quiet, and moved purposefully. He worked hard all day, came home for dinner and watched TV, with very few words spoken in between. He was a good dad, but not very demonstrative with his feelings, and I couldn’t remember him ever saying he loved me until I was much older.
But on that frightful morning, watching my dad run to help my sister, I realized how much he cared for his children. He wasn’t just a dad that provided for us and protected us, he was a dad that loved us.
Do you know your Heavenly Father loves you? He is not just your provider and protector, he is your father that adores you.
My sister escaped any broken bones and came away with a few scrapes and bruises. But I was forever changed, knowing my father loved me.
Prayer: Thank you Heavenly Father for your great love for us. Help us to grasp that knowledge; to impress it on our hearts and to seal it in our minds. Amen
