Rest in Him

The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.’ So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.” Mark 6:30-32

I read this morning that in a recent Christmas season, Americans used 28 million rolls of wrapping paper, 17 million packages of tags and bows, mailed 372 million greeting cards, and set up 35 million Christmas trees. No wonder as we head into the holidays we feel stressed, overwhelmed and exhausted! That’s a lot of coming and going! As we move into fast forward over these next few weeks, let’s remember to slow down and rest. Take little rests by cuddling on the couch and petting a warm, soft, purring cat, while sipping a cup of your favorite holiday spiced coffee or tea. Or head outside to enjoy the last fall flowers and bright colored leaves as you walk through your neighborhood. Stop, close your eyes, and listen to God’s creations around you. Then open your eyes and marvel at the geese flying in formation overhead. God created them to fly in that V formation to help one another conserve energy and reduce the wind resistance during their flight. God created us to conserve energy too! He called his apostles to rest and he calls us to do so as well.

Here’s a little acronym on REST to help us:

  1. Resign from your to do list; lie down and nap.
  2. Escape through quiet, solitude, or relaxing recreation.
  3. Sing and worship to reconnect with God.
  4. Think upon His Word and the blessings of God.

Rest allows us to refocus on what is good in our lives. The more time we spend with God, reading the Bible, singing hymns and worship songs, the more it will allow us to slow down and rest in Him.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to slow down and see Your blessings all around us. May we find true peace through resting in You, so that we may be filled with joy this Christmas season and take flight in Your will for our lives. Thank You for Your precious Son, Jesus. Amen.

  1. What great encouragement to rest in Christ just as we will be launching into one of the busiest seasons of the year!
