Zechariah’s Story Part Two

Christmas wreath 2

Luke 1:11-20

When Zechariah arrived at the temple, a crowd had gathered. They were waiting to see who would be given the privilege of entering the Lord’s sanctuary that morning. Then, they would stay and pray outside as the priest poured incense on the altar and prayed inside. Zechariah wrote his name on a piece of parchment paper and placed it in a bowl that sat before the High Priest.

Zechariah felt something was different this time. Maybe the Lord would choose him. Please, please, Lord, let it be me, Zechariah whispered under his breath. The High Priest  raised his hand for silence and a hush fell over the crowd. Then he reached his hand into the bowl and drew out a folded piece of parchment paper. He unfolded the paper, pausing as he read, then he looked up and called out a name. The name of Zechariah!

People around him, began to slap him on the back and congratulate him, but Zechariah hardly knew they were there; he was in such a daze. He had waited for this moment for so long! Did he really hear his name called? Was this real? His heart thumped loudly in his ears, and with every beat, it called out, “I’ve been chosen, I’ve been chosen! Zechariah would go into the Lord’s sanctuary and burn incense, in the very presence of the Most Holy One of Israel.

He bowed his head in thanksgiving to God and began to make his way to the temple steps. Praising the Lord for this honor with every step he climbed.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, We are so thankful you chose us to be your children. Help us see this blessing today, as we anxiously wait for your Son’s second coming. Amen.
