Zechariah’s Story Part 6

Carly's Christmas painted ornaments 2018

Luke 1:67-80

However, Zechariah did not wonder. He knew exactly what his little son would do, for the Lord had revealed it to him. John would be called the prophet of the Most High, because he would prepare the way for the Lord. For the Lord God was sending His people a mighty Savior from the royal line of his servant David, just as He had promised.

This savior would be more than just a man, he would be God in the flesh; come down to earth to redeem His people and save them from their sin. And sure enough, six months later, a baby was born in Bethlehem. The angels declared, the Savior, yes, the Messiah, the Lord, has been born tonight.

This baby would grow up to turn the world upside down, and because of what he did, millions and millions of people would come into the kingdom of God over the next 2000 years.

But it would all start, with a man crying out in the wilderness. “Prepare a pathway for the Lord’s coming! For God has sent salvation to this people”. That man was John the Baptist, the son of Zechariah and Elizabeth.

The end.

Concluding thoughts: Thank you Lord, for the amazing story in the Bible, telling us about Zechariah and Elizabeth. What extraordinary people they must have been, to raise a son that became John the Baptist. No wonder the Lord had them wait. He wanted only them, to raise this very special prophet and messenger of the Lord’s coming. It’s our trials and struggles that make us the people that we are. As Zechariah and Elizabeth waited for a child, enduring shame and constant disappointment, they learned to trust the Lord. They learned that God was good, even through unanswered prayer.  And in the end they realized, God’s good purposes were always at work in their lives. I pray that we too, can trust that God’s good purposes are at work in our lives as well.

It was written about John the Baptist in Malachi 3:1. “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.” And that’s what John did. He prepared the way for the Lord’s coming. Telling the people to repent and return to the Lord their God. He told them, their Messiah was coming soon. That He would baptize them with the Holy Spirit and with fire” (Luke 3:15-16).

We, at the Encouraging Word ministries, hope you enjoyed this story and we encourage you read it to your families this Christmas season, to prepare their hearts for Christmas day and the celebration of the Lord’s birth.

Prayer: Most Holy Lord, thank you for your precious Son, Jesus. Help us prepare our hearts to embrace Him more fully this Christmas season and in the coming year. Give us a fresh glimpse of who He is and may we worship Him accordingly. In the powerful name of Jesus I pray. Amen.

Philippians 2:9-11   Therefore God exalted him to the highest place

and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
