“For we live by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7
The evening was dark, with heavy clouds covering the moon. The only light source came from the city of Anchorage several miles away. Cameron stood in the open doorway of the airplane, as it soared 1,000 feet above the earth. He looked into the blackness of the night, knowing he had to step out of the safety and security of the plane into the uncertainty of empty space.
My son, Cameron is in an airborne division of Military Intelligence for the U.S. Army, in Alaska. Part of their regular training is to parachute out of an airplane 4-5 times a year. How does anyone do that? It goes against all the laws of self-preservation. To throw oneself from a moving plane, into the blackness of nothing, takes faith. Faith, that your chute will open, and slow your free fall from the heavens. Faith, that you will remember your training: to guide your chute to a safe landing area and touchdown with your legs together, so you don’t brake any bones. Yes, jumping from an airplane takes faith.
It also takes faith to live for Christ. We must believe that Jesus, God in the flesh, came to earth as a man and died a sacrificial death to atone for the sins of the whole world. And then rose to life on the 3rd day, giving all that believe in Him, life after death as well.
It takes faith to believe God will bring good out of our trials and sufferings; that God is working in our lives, even when everything seems to be falling apart. Believers need faith each day as we follow the Lord’s leading and yet at times, see little growth or change.
And as we lay dying, waiting to breathe our final breath and step into the darkness of the unknown, we must have faith that Jesus will be there to guide us safely home. We must trust that He has already made sure our chute will open. That He has prepared a safe landing place for us and that He will personally hold our hand as we touch down on a completely new reality. Life in heaven.
So stand strong fellow believers. Jumping out of an airplane is what we do every day. We live by faith and not by sight. And I wouldn’t want it any other way.
Prayer: Oh dear Lord, give us the faith we need everyday, to live for you. Encourage us and strengthen us to trust you more and to be ready for the next challenge you allow in our lives. Amen.
