Gideon … had been threshing wheat at the bottom of a wine press to hide the grain from the Midianites. The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, “Mighty hero, the Lord is with you! ….. Go with the strength you have and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!” Judges 6:11b-12, 14
Gideon was threshing wheat in a wine press because he was afraid the Midianites might see him, steal his grain and possibly even kill him. No one however, can actually thresh wheat in the bottom of a wine press. There is no wind to blow the chaff away, separating it from the grain. With the chaff still mixed in with the grain, the resulting bread will be barely edible.
I have found myself recently, functioning in safe territory. (Working in a winepress). The task the Lord has given me, seems too hard. I am sure to fail. Disappointing my Lord, and the people that look to me for leadership and direction. I am afraid if I step out of my comfort zone, the wind of reality will reveal all of my inadequacies for everyone to see.
God’s call on our life can be scary, but it is that very challenge that drives us closer to Jesus, as we call out to Him in need. God is calling me to higher ground. He has given me a purpose, a new ministry and beautiful sisters to work with. I must rise to the challenge, like Gideon did and come out of the winepress.
Stop playing it safe, stop eating barely edible bread. Jesus has come to give us abundant life right now, today.
Gideon came out of the winepress, into the full wind; a country overrun with Midianites. He rose to the challenge God was calling him to, and led Israel to victory over their enemy, with God’s help.
That’s the key; with God’s help we can do whatever He asks of us. Your Heavenly Father is calling you to higher ground. Answer that call, and step into the abundant life God has planned for you.
Prayer: My Father in heaven, help me step out of the relative safety of my own winepress. Help me answer your call and draw me closer to You. Amen.
