Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of freshwater there. But the herdsman of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen and said, “The water is ours!” Genesis 26:19–20
Isaac was doing exactly what he was supposed to be doing, and yet there was opposition and quarreling over the well. So Isaac dug another well, but the herdsman from Gerar quarreled over this well too, claiming the water was theirs.
The Bible tells us that Isaac moved on from there and dug a third well, and no one quarreled over this final water source. (Genesis 26:22)
When we experience opposition or failure we are quick to become discouraged. To wonder if we are not doing what the Lord has called us to do. We doubt our purpose, our plans or our abilities. But Isaac did not doubt that the Lord would have him dig a well in this area. He just moved on and tried again.
If you have experienced opposition or failure in a situation, don’t give up, don’t doubt God’s leading in your life. You have done nothing wrong, the Lord’s powerful hand of blessing is still on you. Just move on and try again. Isaac dug three wells before he was able to keep one. Be encouraged, maybe third times a charm (or four or five).
Prayer: Dear Lord, encourage your people as we face setbacks in our lives. Keep our focus on You when things are not going as we plan and help us to pick up our shovels and start digging again.
