“And the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. 25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
There is a wind storm on the Sea of Galilee, as the disciples try to cross to the other side. They had spent a long day with Jesus as He taught the crowds and healed many people, and they had witnessed the incredible feeding of the 5000. This miracle is still on their minds, but soon the fierceness of the storm draws their thoughts to their present perilous situation. They strain at the oars to keep the boat on course, but their already tired bodies are growing weaker, as hour after hour they fight the storm. They begin to worry if they will even make it to shore.
Into this scene comes Jesus walking on the water; it is after three o’clock in the morning, and the night is dark, the wind has thrown the waves into huge white caps, but somehow through the storm the disciples can see Jesus; their tired minds can barely comprehend what they are seeing. This is impossible! Jesus can’t walk on water! It must be a water spirit! And terror fills their minds.
Jesus knows their thoughts and fears and seeks to reassure them, He tells them, “Take courage, it is I”. Does He mean “I”, as in “I AM”? What is Jesus saying? Is He trying to help them connect the dots? He has just multiplied a few fish and loafs of bread to feed a crowd of over 5000 people; does that remind the disciples of the way the Lord fed the children of Israel in the desert with manna from heaven? Now Jesus is controlling the elements of water, as if He is walking on dry land; didn’t the Lord Almighty part the Red Sea? Can they see the similarities? Jesus is saying He is “I AM”. Just as God told Moses at the burning bush, “tell the people “I AM” as sent you.
As Jesus climbed into the boat, the wind died down and the disciples fell to their knees as they worshiped Jesus as the Son of God for the first time. They were just beginning to realize Jesus was much more than the amazing prophet and teacher they thought He was.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, open my eyes to see the truth of who you are, in all your splendor. Help me to connect the dots in scripture and to understand Your Word on a deeper level. Thank you for revealing yourself to me personally and to the world every day. I love You Lord. Amen.
