Comfort in His Unchanging Nature

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17 NIV

As I set out on my daily walk with Soda Pop the dog, I scanned the sights and sounds around me. Two abandoned and rusted grocery carts carried tattered blankets and milk crates. A line of cars whizzed by, with occasional horns blaring. Empty potato chip bags and candy wrappers hung in the breeze. As I absorbed the noise, clutter, filth, and toil, I recalled a quieter, simpler, purer time in my neighborhood. We moved to Oregon nearly 13 years ago. I was stricken by how much had changed, and all I could see was a dark underbelly of what was once so good. Yet, as Soda and I kept walking, as if by divine design, my eyes found a family of robins tweeting, preening, and searching for worms. Ah, thank you, Lord, I thought, as He reminded me of that which I already knew and had forgotten.

Those exquisite robins know nothing of our suffering and despair, of emotional pain or loss, of a disconnected society overrun by technology, or of increasing populations and crowded and dirty streets. They know what they have always known. They do what they have always done and thrive in spite of all the change we experience. They live, as my dog lives, completely unaffected by a world of unpredictability and uncertainty. Birds will be birds, and dogs will be dogs: unchanging in a changing world. Just like our God, our timeless creator, He designed these comforting reminders as a direct link to His essence–His unchanging and forever reliable nature. And that pure and true understanding, my dear friends, is what we can always hold onto when we think we are losing grip of the good in this world. Our God is so much bigger than our worldly circumstances, and we can find hope and joy right here, right now, as we look forward to the eternal goodness of the life to come.

Prayer: Father God, thank you for your daily reminders of that which is good and pure in this world. Set us apart and help us to create holy moments right now, Father, through your divine eyes, and by the power of your Holy Spirit. In your Son’s precious name, Amen.

  1. Dear Tracy, as I deal with a tough family situation with my son’s in laws in CA, I take in your message. I am using this situation to witness to my son, by sending him Bible verses and reminding him of who God is and what he can do in their lives. I love your imagery of your dog and the robins. It’s just what Jesus told us to do, live our lives with His help and aid. Live each day, and revel in those Holy moments that He shares with us. I love the gospel song, “His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches over me.” Blessings, Susan
