Quiet Waters

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul. Psalm 23:1-3a

Sheep will not drink from rushing water, so the shepherd must guide them to inlets or ponds where the water is calm. If there are none close by the shepherd will make one. He will block off the flowing water with rocks to form a protected inlet for the sheep to drink from.

At times my life seems like constant rushing water, there is not even a minute to spare or a place for me to recharge and refresh in God’s word. It is usually my fault as I pack too many activities and commitments into a day. I must be productive, I must whittle down my to-do list, (or so I think).

And then, right in the middle of my busy day the Lord makes an inlet of freshwater for me to drink from. A moment for me to slip away and read His word. For Jesus is our living water, the refreshing water of the word of God. As I pause to drink His word, life and breath begin to flow back into my body. I am re-focused and refreshed to finish my busy day.

How thankful I am for a shepherd that is attentive to my needs and provides me with quiet waters to refresh and restore my soul.

Prayer: Thank you Father for your love and provision for me. Thank you for your Word, that always feeds my soul. I love you, Lord. Amen.

  1. Oh Linda, such a beautiful reminder for each of us , to stop doing, stop achieving, and just BE in His presence .To let His loving embrace wrap around us and His Word, our Living Water, as you pointed out, renew and refresh us. Yes, I need this today and every day. Blessings, Susan
