“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom.” Colossians 3:16
My dear friend Joan Davis passed away last week. She died on her 87th birthday. What a precious gift, to get to see Jesus on your birthday!
She had a huge impact on my life when I was a young believer. She was my role model and mentor in the Lord. I was only 18 years old when I began spending time with her son, he was the first Christian I had ever dated and he was a breath of fresh air to me.
My faith journey had begun at the age of 12, but never really progressed much through the years. I still knew little to nothing about the Bible and had no idea what being a Christian was about, but that all changed when I met the Davis family.
Joan introduced me to Bible studies. She led our peer group in a study that met once a week; hanging out with other believers, talking about the Bible and discussing our real life issues in an open and honest way was a bit shocking at first, but totally addicting. Once you crossed over that line, you will never want to go back to small talk with your friends again.
Joan always encouraged me and pointed me back to Jesus. She told me to take things in stride, to not hold on to tightly to anything but Jesus, and to forgive myself when I messed up. I have had many friends and acquaintances in the faith, but none with the passion and down to earth no nonsense approach to Christianity that Joan had.
She was a beacon of light to me, that shone brightly to Jesus. I look forward to the day we can spend time together again in heaven, talking about our Savior Jesus. She was precious to me and I will miss her.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for this faithful saint, that loved you so much. Help me be a light that reflects your glory just as Joan did and help me to appreciate the mature believers you continue to place in my life today, for my continued growth. I love you Lord. Amen.
