For we know that our old self was crucified with him, so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin. Romans 6:6
We sat glued to our chairs, staring intently at our dinner guest. As he paused in his story, we all held our breath, you could hear a pin drop it was so quiet. The evening had taken an unexpected turn, what began as a simple “thank you” dinner, turned into a powerful, electric charge of faith. It sizzled up our arms and into our hearts, recharging our leaky grasp on the power of the Holy Spirit.
Juan owns his own landscaping business and had worked for my mom and sister for several years. This Autumn the leaves have been especially heavy, seemingly to all fall at the same time. Juan was working overtime to keep up with the demand and doing a great job. So my sister thought it would be nice to invite Juan and his family to dinner, as a thank you, for all his hard work.
Juan came with his wife and two daughters, ages 11 and 14. We started the dinner with a prayer and sat down to eat and get to know each other better. Right away, Juan started talking about Jesus. He said, “Jesus changed my life”.
I use to drink too much beer. I was always partying with my friends. Until one day a man on the street talked to me about Jesus. He told me the only way to heaven was through faith in Jesus Christ, the son of God.
He shared the Good News with me, and I knew in my heart that it was true. I accepted Jesus as Lord that very day. Then I shared Jesus with my wife, my parents and my siblings and they all came to believe in Jesus too.
My family use to drink a lot of beer when we would get together for gatherings, but now we don’t drink at all. Jesus changed all of our lives. We live to honor Him and thank Him for saving us.
When he stopped talking, we sat there in a stupor. This humble quiet man, (that ended up being not so quiet) had shared what was most important to him, in front of people he barely knew.
His life was changed. He was not the same person anymore and he wanted everyone to know it.
We were all moved by his declaration of faith. And told him, he too was changing lives by sharing his message with others. I left that night, praying that my life would be a powerful impact for Christ also. That people would see by the way I live that Jesus was my Lord. That indeed he had changed my life, and was continuing to change me every day.
Prayer: Thank you Lord for bold people that speak up for you, and inspire others to do the same. Help us share our own stories to encourage and recharge others in their faith. In Jesus name. Amen.
