Reflect and Respond

Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.          Isaiah 43:18-19

I was in a deep sleep when suddenly a piercing alarm woke me. I sat straight up in bed, heart pounding, fully alert and looked over at my husband who was also sitting up. The fire alarm continued to blare in our hotel room as we got out of bed and began to put our clothes on.

“Do we really have to go outside in these freezing temperatures?” I asked my husband. For we were visiting our son and his family for Christmas in Alaska and it was negative nine degrees outside. I had no desire to test my endurance against sub-zero temperatures at four o’clock in the morning (or any other time for that matter), unless I really had to.

At that moment the alarm stopped. We again looked at each and my husband said, “Well, I’m going back to bed”.

As I stood there half dressed, I asked “Don’t you think we should look in the hall and see if anything is happening?”

He shrugged and said, “They’ll let us know if we need to leave”. And seemingly without a care in the world, he slipped into the covers and went back to sleep. I on the other hand, lay wide awake for quite some time, wondering what had happened and if I should have done something differently.

The New Year can be a sort of wake-up call for us, as we review the past year and contemplate any goals or changes we want to make moving forward. Don’t go back to sleep, apply these verses to your own life and discover the Lord’s encouragement and direction for you personally in the coming year.

1. Review the past year and thank the Lord for His provisions:                                           1 Chronicles 16:11-12 – Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always. Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced…

2. The Lord has plans for you this year:                                                                                               Isaiah 43:18-19 Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past [your previous mistakes]. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.                Proverbs 13:16 – A wise man thinks ahead..                                      Proverbs 27:23 – Be diligent to know the state of your flocks and attend to your herds.

3. Trust the Lord with this new year:                                                       Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 2 Corinthians 12:9 – He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.                                                       Colossians 3:17 – “Whatever you do,  do it all in the name of Jesus, giving thanks to God”.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for your covering and blessing on the previous year. Guide me to your plans and purposes this year, that I may bring you glory and make good use of my time. Encourage me to step out in faith and fully trust you in the results. I love you Lord, in Jesus name I pray. Amen.

  2. Linda, I love your three main points with scripture to back them up for this New Year. I pray your prayer for myself, my loved ones, and all people everywhere. I especially loved the part ” encourage me to step out in Faith and fully Trust you in the results”. Yes Lord, Amen! Blessings, Susan
