You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. Psalm 16:11
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
As I proceeded into town approaching my mother’s church, my heart became heavy as I saw the old oak trees that lined the street and the church parking lot being cut down. Our city has been planning to expand the road to put in sidewalks and to make it safer for pedestrians and bicyclists. It’s difficult when something beautiful and grand has to be taken down for there to be something deemed better to be put in its place.
There are always at least two sides to a story. Apparently, many of the old trees along the road are causing cracks and damage to the road, parking lot and driveways. During the next big storm, some trees had the probability of falling on homes or into the street. Also, many bicyclists and pedestrians, especially schoolchildren, have risked traveling along the edge of this busy thorough way to school and the nearby park for many years.
So as we say goodbye to the old beautiful trees, we must look ahead to the new practicalities. Some of the trees’ wood is being saved to make furniture and other items to be remembered by. In their place will be safe paths for pedestrians to trod and new trees will be planted. It will be completely different.
Change can bring loss and difficulties as well as bring about beneficial results. And with the old year passing, there were beautiful things to remember and struggles to cut down and let go of. Let’s look forward to the fresh possibilities of this New Year. We will trod on clear paths and plant brand new memories.
Let’s each remember that if we choose God’s path, we will experience a peace and joy that only He can provide. It won’t matter if along His path trees fall or roots tear up the road. We will be firmly planted in Him alone and thus find our strength in Him to endure, grow and flourish. As Christians, we keep our hope in eternal pleasures when one day we will be with our Heavenly Father. Until then, let’s walk with Jesus.
Prayer: Lord we thank you for the path of forgiveness and renewal through your Son, Jesus. As we look ahead to this new year may we always keep our eyes on You so that we stay on Your path and are filled with joy in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
