The Lord Watches Over You

The Lord watches over you, the Lord is your shade at your right hand. Psalm 121:5

I could hear my three-year-old granddaughter Maya, squeal with delight, as she cried out, “higher, grandpa, higher”. My husband had become Maya’s new constant companion, while we were on vacation in Alabama visiting family. He played hide and seek and read books to her inside the house and he spent endless hours outside: pushing her on the swing, pulling her around the yard on her rolling worm and just watching over her as she explored their 4 acre yard.

I would play with Maya too, but after a time I would get distracted or tired and feel the need to do something else, to get some task done, read a book of my choice or even take a lovely vacation nap.

I was so impressed with my husband’s patience and selflessness as he followed her around the yard. He just enjoyed being with her and spending time with her. It was such a beautiful picture of the Lord watching over us.

Psalm 139 tells us the Lord knows when we sit or stand, when we sleep or work, that the Lord is familiar with all our ways. He knows this because He is with us, He is watching over us and it is a delight to Him.

He never gets bored or tired of being with us. He rejoices over us (Isaiah 139:6) and thinks of us constantly. “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain”, Psalm 139:6.

Prayer: Dear Father, how blessed we are to be your children, to have a heavenly father that thinks of us always and enjoys being with us. It puts a whole new perspective on our day. Oh how we love you Lord. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
