Be Prepared for the Battle

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 6:12

Alaska is a breathtakingly beautiful place, full of snowy towering mountains, glacier fed rivers, and abundant wildlife. However Alaska is not for the faint of heart. Especially if you are an outdoor enthusiast. You must be ready for almost anything.

My son and daughter-in-law were hiking in Crows Pass, Alaska when they encountered a very aggressive black bear. They did everything they were taught to do when sighting a bear, they had bells attached to their backpacks, so as not to surprise the bear. They were loud when they saw him, making themselves large and waving their arms, but all to no avail, the bear continued to approach. At only 10 feet away they sprayed him with bear spray, which didn’t seem to faze him in the least, as he licked his chops and walked around the cloud of spray. At this point my son pulled out his gun and fired off a shot close to him, causing him to casually run away.

They thanked the Lord for protecting them through this encounter, and that they were well prepared to face a predator in the wilds of Alaska.

As I thought of this aggressive bear it reminded me of our battle against our enemy the devil. We also need to be prepared. Our enemy is relentless and determined to bring us down and stop any progress we are trying to make in our spiritual life and in our efforts to share the Good News.

Let’s take a lesson from the prepared Alaskan hikers.

  1. Wear your bear bells: be loud, stand tall. Don’t surprise people, live a life that all can see that you love Jesus and live in love. Ephesians 5:15-26
  2. Be ready with your bear spray: nothing irritates Satan and his demons more than hearing our praise and thanks to Jesus. So, say it, sing it, or spray it out loud. Ephesians 5:20
Bring out the big guns: when the attacks get serious and Satan just keeps coming, you must bring out the big guns; for Christians that is the sword of the spirit, the powerful Word of God. For the Lord is faithful, He strengthens us and protects us against the evil one. Ephesians 6:17, 2 Thessalonians 3:3
  • Prayer: thank you Heavenly Father for protecting us against the evil one. Help us to stand tall and keep fighting the good fight. In Jesus name. Amen.

    1. In a time such as this, the proportion of which we have not seen in our nation’s history, your message is profoundly important. We are called to stand firm, with courage and unwavering resolve, prepared to fight the battle in ANY facet of American life. Paul did not set an example of complacency, for us to sit quietly, as we yearn for the afterlife, but to fight for it here and now as we bring as many people to Christ as we can in the process. Thank you, Linda, for your sobering yet powerful reminder.
