Last night an angel of the God whose I am and whom I serve stood beside me and said, “Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar, and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.” Acts 27:23-24
Paul was being taken by ship to Rome as a prisoner, to stand trial before Caesar. The Jews had brought up charges against him for preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.
While at sea a terrible storm of hurricane force came upon them. After many days with no sun or stars visible everyone on the ship lost hope of being saved (Acts 27:20). According to the opening verse, that meant Paul too.
Even strong believers need encouragement from time to time, especially when the light has been dimmed. For Paul it was physical, the terrible storm and no illumination from the sun or stars. Our storms can be just as hard, whether they are physical or spiritual. We need the light of the Lord shining in our lives, to give us hope and help us through.
Jesus is our light. Just as Jesus sent an angel to tell Paul to not be afraid, Jesus sends us the same message, through His powerful Word.
… Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:29-31
Christians believe, we seek to obey, we even walk on water at times, and yet when the storms of life come, doubt and fear can still seep into our hearts.
Turn to Jesus, He will catch you, don’t be afraid. Keep your eyes on Him, He still has work for you to do.
Prayer: Thank you Heavenly Father for your encouragement and your saving grace. May we trust you more as we seek you daily. In Jesus name’. Amen.
